Outdoor Fall Mini Session Outfit Tips

Portrait

I’ve created some fall outfit inspiration to help you plan for your upcoming session!

These recommendations are to be used as a guide, it doesn’t mean you need to follow them to a T, and you maybe have similar pieces in your closet already. It’s all about pairing neutrals with a hint of color (usually a muted color, think: whites, tans, mustard, muted wine colors, etc). In Spring, Fall and Winter, I always suggest adding layers to your outfits as well. Layers photograph really nice and it also helps incase the weather turns out to be cooler than planned. Layers like cardigans, jackets, vests are the perfect finishing touch!

Finding the perfect outfit for your family session may take a little bit of work, and you probably have great pieces already in your closet that could work together! Use these tips below to help create a plan. If you need help deciding what to wear or want feedback, I’d love to help with that, just send me an email!

5 BASIC TIPS FOR PLANNING FAMILY OUTFITS

  1. Coordinate your outfits by finding a color palette you love and finding pieces that compliment one another. Avoid matchy-matchy and black as your main color. Soft, muted and neutral colors look great for my style of photography, please avoid bright/neon hues.
  2. Layer and add accessories with a hat, headbands, necklace, jacket, or vests. Layers especially help when the weather turns out to be cooler than planned.
  3. Wear clothes that are fashionable, yet still functional for the location. Keep in mind we may be moving around the park to capture different spots the park has to offer!
  4. When it comes to patterns, a good rule of thumb is to have one or two patterned outfits for every three people. Floral prints, polka dots, plaids work great! Also, avoid large logos. I typically like to start by finding a floral dress for mom or a daughter and then building the rest of the “ensemble” surrounding that piece, pulling colors out of the dress.
  5. Shoes! Remember that you’ll want them to be comfortable as we move around, but please stay away from character themed shoes, athletic shoes, and bulky soles.
