Things to keep in mind when deciding on outfits:
1. Coordinate Colors
Look for ones that complement each other and have common shades.
2. Coordinate Styles
People should know that you’re headed to the same place. If one person is going to be fancy, all of the rest need to be too. Whatever vibe you are trying to portray needs to be showcased through everyone.
3. Wear solids or simple patterns
I LOVE patterns but make sure it is to a minimum. If one person is wearing a pattern, then the others need to be in solids and coordinating with an accessory.
4. Consider your locations
Think of your surroundings when picking out your colors. For example, if your session is in a green field with trees, a green dress wouldn’t be ideal. I would try a bold color such as pink to make you “pop” out.
5. Stick to more fitted clothing
Often if clothes are baggy it will portray your body to look bigger.
6. Jazz up your outfit
Layers are awesome and I am obsessed with accessories! Scarfs, necklaces, hats, mittens, vests, shoes, tights, hair clips etc. Please try to incorporate them especially on the little kids! They look SO cute!
7. Bring a few outfits
For sessions that are an hour or longer, I encourage my clients to bring another set of clothes. It is so fun to incorporate different outfits in one session! This also allows you to bring a dressy and casual set.
8. Be comfortable and have fun with it!
If you aren’t comfortable in your outfit then it will show. Dress nice, but don’t get so dressed up that you are uncomfortable.
9. Glasses tip
Most lenses have a glare. The safest option is to check with your eye doctor and ask if they’ll loan you a similar pair without lenses or wear contacts.
*I highly recommend having a professional do your hair and makeup for your engagement photos (or senior portraits)! This would be a great time to do a trial with your makeup artist and hair stylist!
Things not to wear:
-Exact matching outfits. White shirts and jeans don’t have much personality and your engagement session is your time to showcase it.
-Tops with large obnoxious logos
-Super short skirts/dresses
Ideas | Props:
-Sunglasses
– A “thank you” or “save the date” personalized sign
– Balloons
– Fresh flowers
– Pets
– Blankets
– Hats
– Your favorite chair or couch
– Anything else that makes your relationship unique and special to you
Lastly, the most important thing to remember about preparing for your session is that I am trying to photograph you, so be yourself! Interact with each other the way you normally would. Goof off, make faces, cuddle, laugh, play. These are when my favorite photos are captured! I LOVE natural YOU shots!! I hope these help you prepare for your next session.
